The Opposite of Addiction

The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is community. For both the addict and the betrayed partner, this disease thrives on isolation. No one breaks out pornography when visitors come to the house. It’s always done in isolation, in one form or another. Whether that is acting out alone, or creating a double life for the purpose of meeting selfish sexual needs. This isolation can only be overcome by actively joining a recovery community for the addict and only by actively joining a betrayed partner recovery community for the spouse/partner of the addict. Many people have tried to work this out on their own, trying to make promises and abstaining for a period of time. For the addict, this just doesn’t work. We have an enemy and one of his greatest tools is isolating someone who is suffering. The weapon that defeats this is community.
